New Year
Week of Prayer
04 -10 January 2026
As a Church family we are taking the first week in January to pause, give thanks and pray for our many and varied ministries, and for each other before we launch all the groups going into 2026. The prayer room will be set up with various stations to enable people to drop in and pray when church is open. Our church prayer meeting is on Wednesday 07 January and Youth & Children’s team prayers on 09 January to pray into future vision. All are invited to these gatherings.
Below are ideas for each day. Please feel free to use this and any other resources that you have to participate with the whole church. If you have any words, or images, or Scripture that you feel could be shared with the whole church, please feel free to email them to office@pmch.org.uk or drop them into the church reception office.
Thank you for joining in prayer for PMCH and for God’s blessings over all that happens here in the year ahead.
Day One - Contending with God
Genesis 32.26 Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
Thank you for praying for the worship, ministry and mission of PMCH this week.
Spend a few moments today contending with God as Jacob did. This may mean making the effort to set aside time, space or place. This may mean stirring yourself up physically, mentally, or in your spirit. You may not be praying with a group, but you are praying with the rest of the church, so be encouraged to really contend with God and seek blessing for yourself first and then for the church.
Day Two - Receiving and sharing the blessing
Psalm 32.1 “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”
Before you come to praying for some aspect of the church’s life and ministry, ensure that you are right with God. Call up an image of the Prodigal son on your phone or device and remind yourself of the amazing love and forgiveness of God. Pray that this will be the hall mark of all we are and do at PMCH.
Day Three - PMCH
Romans 12:12-14 “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
Take a piece of paper and write out some of these important characteristics of Church. You might like to add to it the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5.22-23
Doodle or colour round the words as you pray for the blessing of the Spirit on the whole church.
What are you seeing in the words or the shapes you have created?
Day Four - Leadership
2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
Our leadership team and staff team and so many others giving time and energy to PMCH need our prayers of protection and the Spirit’s equipping so that they can ‘abound in every good work’.
Perhaps you could text, email, or write a message of encouragement for someone as you pray for wise leadership for the church. Please continue to pray for the search for a new minister.
Day Five - New Christians
John 20.29 “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”
Our strong desire and our call from God is to see new disciples following Jesus. Pray for the Alpha course that is about to begin. Could you invite someone and bring them along?
Picture in your mind the faces you see on a Sunday. You may not know if they are new in the faith or not, but pray for God’s Spirit to grow in them.
Take a look at our social media pages and pray through the images from Messy Church – for those families, the adults as well as the children.
Day Six - Ministry
Jeremiah 17:7-8 “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.”
We are called to be faithful in our calling to share our gifts and skills in God’s service. We are the roots of the ministries of PMCH reaching out into the community. Take a look on the website or call to mind as best you can the massive variety of ways that we share the Good News of Jesus through our love, care, compassion and seeking justice and help for the most needy.
Is there one of those ministries you could encourage or support practically this week.
Day Seven - The City
Jeremiah 29.7 “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
This felt like a crazy promise to the people of Israel who had become refugees by force. Captured and exiled in another country. There will be some who feel like that about the city of Plymouth!
However, if God’s word was true for the Israelites, it is true for us. Pray God’s blessing on this city and for all the churches as we play our part in helping people to thrive.
Find an A-Z of the city, or call up a map on your phone, or device. Spot where the churches are and pray a blessing on them.
