May Update
Dear wonderful folk of PMCH
As you read this message, we find ourselves in the period between Easter and Pentecost. I’ve been reflecting on what the disciples might have been feeling. They had experienced the trauma of seeing the one in whom they had placed all their hope crucified, followed by the joy of the resurrection. Although Jesus had given them clear direction about what would happen next, I imagine they were still confused and fearful, yet holding on to hope as they waited.
Waiting can be hard. We all experience it in different ways, both individually and as a church family. But let us hold on to the truth that there is hope in the waiting.
To the disciples, Jesus said:
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” (Acts 1:4)
As we make our way towards Pentecost, be reminded that the promises of Jesus are as true for you as they were for the disciples waiting in Jerusalem.
Come, Holy Spirit.
Jonny
What’s coming up in May
Church Anniversary
As we look ahead to our Church Anniversary on May 10th, we’re taking a moment as a church family to give thanks for all that God has been doing among us at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall. It’s been a year of encouragement and growth, and we continue to trust that there is even more to come.
We have Alistair Sharp preaching at our Morning Service, many of you will remember Alistair in his early years at Plymouth Central Hall and we’re thrilled that he is returning to share in our Anniversary celebration.
We would normally be holding our Gift Day at this time but due to current complications with Lloyds bank we are delaying this for the moment. Jonny’s letter with more info on this is available to read HERE
Prayer Meeting | Wednesday 06 May | 7:30pm
Our prayer meeting will still be back in the Prayer Chapel this month.
Youth Camps - Booking is now open
Newquay Camp 10-12 July 2026
Our Newquay camp has been running for many years and is a great time with all the young people from PMCH youth (11-18 year olds). We stay in tents at a campsite and enjoy a whole field to ourselves. The weekend is very much a relaxing time enjoying the local beaches and spending time together building friendships. We will also have some sessions exploring the Christian faith, with opportunities for discussions.
Satellites 06-11 August 2026
Satellites is an amazing event that wants to encourage young people to live with God at the centre of their lives. As part of the festival there will be several main sessions that will include worship and teaching. However, alongside this there will be activities, sports, seminars, and fun things to do throughout the week. This is for all young people aged 11-18. We camp as our own group and provide meals.

External Cleaning Works – May Notice for Permit Holders
Please be aware that external cleaning works will be taking place at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall during May as part of preparations for the university graduations. This will include the use of specialist cleaning chemicals. Works are planned for early May at the rear of the building (date TBC), and on 25th and 28th May at the front (during half term). During these times, there may be some temporary access restrictions, cordoned-off areas, and slight disruption to parking. We’ll aim to keep any impact to a minimum and will keep users updated as dates are confirmed. Thank you for your understanding.

WAVES – a brave book, full of hope and wisdom
Hannah Thomas has recently published a book which may be helpful to you, or a gift you could give to someone you know. A leaflet and a viewing copy of the book can be found on the Welcome Desk in the PMCH Reception area or please talk to Dave & Jane Martin.
Sadly, the death of a baby is not a rare event. Around 13 babies die shortly before, during or soon after birth every day in the UK. Miscarriage affects approximately 1 in 8 known pregnancies, totalling over 100,000 cases annually, with some estimates suggesting that up to 1 in 5 pregnancies end in loss.
The statistics stand witness to a huge weight of anxiety, loss and grief that affects so many women, their partners and families and yet it is rarely spoken about. There are a growing number of support agencies and NHS provision for counselling and support is improving, so every resource that offers insight and help is a treasure. ‘Waves’ is just that.
"Waves is a beautifully photographed/illustrated book, bursting with hope and positivity. It comes from the author’s personal experience of grief, but recognises that all grief is unique. It is fundamentally a practical guide to wellbeing which will connect with many bereaved parents."
Rowena Pailing - Head of Bereavement Support Services, Sands Charity
